Settling Your Child into our nursery!
Before Your Child Starts:
Before your child's first day, we'll invite you to visit the nursery and spend time getting to know our environment, team and routines.
During your visit we'll:
- Introduce you to your child's Key Person.
- Learn about your child's interests, routines and preferences.
- Discuss sleep, meals, allergies, comforters and any additional needs.
- Answer any questions you may have.
- Explain how we'll keep you updated throughout the day using our parent communication platform.
This helps us build a picture of your child before they even begin, allowing us to provide personalised care from day one.
Meet Your Child's Key Person
Every child at Banana Moon Stoke Poges is assigned a dedicated Key Person who plays an important role in helping them settle.
Your child's Key Person will:
- Build a trusting relationship with your child.
- Get to know their personality and interests.
- Support their emotional wellbeing.
- Keep you informed about their progress.
- Plan activities based on their individual development.
Having one familiar adult helps children feel safe, secure and confident as they begin their nursery journey.
Our Settling-In Sessions
We know that every child settles at their own pace, so we offer flexible settling-in sessions that can be adapted to suit your child's individual needs.
Some children are ready to explore independently after a short visit, while others may benefit from several shorter sessions before staying for longer periods.
There is no "right" amount of time—it is about finding what works best for your child.
Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable
There are lots of simple things that can help your child feel more confident before they start nursery.
You could:
- Talk positively about nursery.
- Read books about starting nursery.
- Visit the nursery together.
- Practice short separations from family members.
- Encourage independence with simple tasks such as washing hands or putting on shoes.
If your child has a favourite comforter, blanket or teddy, they're welcome to bring it along to help them feel secure.
Saying Goodbye
Goodbyes can often be harder for parents than children!
Although it may be tempting to sneak away once your child is distracted, a calm, reassuring goodbye helps build trust and confidence.
Our experienced team will always be there to comfort your child, engage them in an activity and help them settle quickly.
Many children stop crying just moments after their parent leaves.
Keeping You Updated
We understand how important reassurance is, especially during the first few weeks.
Throughout your child's day we'll keep you updated with information about:
- Meals and snacks
- Nappy changes or toileting
- Sleep times
- Activities and learning experiences
- Photographs and observations
- How your child is settling
If you're feeling anxious, you're always welcome to give us a call to see how your child is getting on.
Every Child Settles Differently
Some children settle within a few days, while others may take several weeks.
It's perfectly normal for children to have good days and more emotional days as they adjust to a new routine.
Our team will continue working alongside you, adapting our approach where needed to ensure your child feels safe, happy and valued.

We believe the best outcomes happen when parents and nursery work together.
We encourage open communication and welcome updates about changes at home, family events or anything that may affect your child's emotions or routine.
By working as one team, we can provide consistent support both at home and at nursery.
